During my time at Clemson University and while studying abroad, I have taken courses that have challenged me in different ways, helping me grow both academically and personally. This section outlines the coursework I have completed, specifically relevant to my major in Spanish and International Health, and my future career as a healthcare professional. 

SPANISH COURSES

Spanish 3050

Intermediate Spanish Conversation and Composition I, practice in spoken Spanish with emphasis on vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, and comprehension. Includes written work to increase accuracy and assignments in the language laboratory.

Spanish 3150

Spanish for Health Professionals, medical concepts and terminology in Spanish; designed for students who plan to work in professions related to public health care. 

Spanish 3180

Spanish Civilization and Culture, studies Spanish culture from both a historical and sociological perspective. The history of Spanish civilization from pre-history to modern times is analyzed while interacting with the reality of modern day Spain in order to interpret and understand contemporary culture.

Spanish 3130

Spanish Contemporary Literature, a class I took abroad, â€‹examines some of the major Spanish authors from the end of the 19th century up to the present day, introduces major topics and theoretical approaches relevant to their writing, and interprets literary texts from different genres to examine major areas of Spanish culture and how they have changed over the last century.

Spanish 3010

Spanish Composition for Health Professionals,  an intensive application of writing skills through exploration of health-related topics, accelerated review of grammatical structures, and exposure to medical vocabulary and concepts.

Spanish 4180

Technical Spanish for Health Management Professionals, a

technical health communication course in Spanish with emphasis on managerial and business aspects of the international health industry.

Spanish 4190

Health and the Hispanic Community, studies the

 cultural aspects of health and health services in Hispanic populations.   

Spanish 3070

Food and Culture in Spain, a class I took abroad, focuses on

Spanish gastronomy, with complex value codes and beliefs related to Spanish local products and their consumption. Students will be encouraged to define the concepts of food and culture, explore the role of cuisine in collective and individual identities, and examine how cultural food habits are created and change.

Biology

General Biology I and lab,  

​Includes an evolutionary approach to cells, cellular activities, genetics, and animal diversity emphasizing the processes of science. 

Chemistry 1010

General Chemistry I,  introduction to the elementary concepts of chemistry through classroom and laboratory experience. Emphasizes chemical reactions and the use of symbolic representation, the mole concept and its applications and molecular structure.

Chemistry 1020

General Chemistry I Lab, a continuation of CH 1010, treating solutions, rates of reactions, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, chemistry of selected elements, and an introduction to organic chemistry. 

Biology 2220

Human Anatomy and Physiology I, basic introductory course in integrated human anatomy and physiology covering cells and tissues; integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems; sensory organs. Physiology is stressed.

Biology 2230

Human Anatomy and Physiology II (and lab) , a continuation of BIOL 2220 covering endocrine, reproductive, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary, and digestive systems; fluid and electrolyte balance. Physiology is stressed. 

Microbiology 3050+3060​

General Microbiology (and lab) including the 

morphology, physiology, classification, distribution, and cultivation of microorganisms.

The lab section practices common microbiology laboratory techniques. 

Chemistry

2230+2270

Organic Chemistry I (and lab) introductory course in the principles of organic chemistry and a study of the properties, preparations, and interrelationships of the important classes of organic compounds.

Organic Chemistry II and lab, continuation of CH 2230. 

Physics

2070+2090

General Physics I (and lab) covers topics such as mechanics, waves, fluids, and thermal physics. 

Physics

General Physics II (and lab) covers topics such as electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic waves, optics, and modern physics. 

Biochemistry 3050

Essential Elements of Biochemistry teaches an introduction to structure, synthesis, metabolism and function of biomolecules in living organisms.

Biology 4890

Clinical Applications and Medical Practice explores various fields, specialties, and subspecialties in medicine. Provides students with the opportunity to shadow physicians in a hospital and/or office setting.

HEALTH COURSES

Health 2020

Introduction to Public Health, is a course that examines the forces that have influenced current health delivery systems, health practices, and trends. Population and public health theories/models are also studied. 

Health 2980

Human Health and Disease includes an overview of behavioral, biological and psycho-social factors associated with major human diseases and conditions.

Health 2030

Overview of Healthcare Systems is a course that gives an â€‹introduction to the American health care delivery system, including its foundation, primary characteristics, resources and processes. Fee-for-service, managed care, and integrated care organizations are discussed, and access, cost and quality of care are considered. 

Health 2400

Determinants of Health Behavior includes Analysis of health behaviors based on psychological, social, cultural, and environmental factors. It also introduces health behavior theories.

Health 3800

Epidemiology is a course that 

​introduces epidemiological principles and methods used in the study of the origin, distribution, and control of disease. 

Health 4700

Global Health 

deepens students’ knowledge of global health and how public health work is conducted internationally. The course also introduces assessment of international health needs and designing, implementing, managing, and evaluating public health programs in international settings.

Health 4990

This was an Independent Study credit that was accounted for by my role as an Undergraduate Learning Assistant in Anatomy and Physiology lab.  

Health 4900

Research and Evaluation Strategies for Public Health is a course that discusses research in health, as well as ethical, moral, and legal issues involved in health research, and focuses on analysis of reported research. 

Health 4310

This course, Public and Environmental Health, focused on principles of environmental health, emphasizing various health concerns created by the interactions of people with their environment.
